Shower Drain & Sump
Date: June 1, 1999
From: Donna M. Cass bacchus42@earthlink.netDoes anyone have information regarding the shower sumps and if the floor area of the heads, which have drains, also drain into the sump for the showers on Endeavour 42s?

The drains in the head go to bildge on the 42. I have a 42 and correctted the problem by putting putting a T fitting off the line from the thru hull to shower drain.

From: Bob and Sandy Warren rwarren@inna.netI have a 1979 E-32. The "shower" drain for the head floor leaks where I can't get at it, I would guess where the drain hose under the floor is attached to an elbow of the drain.
Can anyone tell me whether the drain was built with a backing nut of some sort, or was it just set in the floor of the head and then fixed in place and made waterproof with sealant? When it clogs, which it does easily, and I apply some water with pressure to the fitting to clear the obstruction, some leaking takes place as you can see water where a small cabin sole cutoff can be removed for getting at wiring and the mast compression tube.

From: Tom Gilbert TGil95746@aol.comDear Bob and Sandy. Yeah, I had that problem on my 1980 E32 also. I pulled the access pieces up from around the mast compression post, and cut the hose. I then was able to disassemble the plumbing and turn the backing nut with a large pipe wrench, a small amount at a time. My drain had a black iron pipe coming down from the drain stem, then an elbow, then a small nipple to attach the drain hose. I removed the nasty appearing plastic drain, and installed a 3/4" I.D. flush brass drain. That required opening the hole in the shower pan with a dremel. I then replumbed the whole assembly with larger diameter tubing into the bilge. Now I get great drainage, albeit into my bilge, and a pretty dry floor. Someday, I'll install a small pump to send the grey water overboard through the sink throughhull. It was pretty straight forward as repairs go. Good luck !

From: Paul Uhl endvr32@endeavourowners.comHi everyone,
I was just talking to Tom Gilbert about drains and through hulls on our boats, and ended up with . . . unanswered questions:Shower Drain. Ours was disconnected before we bought our boat and I'm now considering refitting it. The problem is that we want it to discharge directly overboard rather than into the bilge as I believe it was originally designed to do.

Howdy folkes,
Our E32 has a shower drain that goes to a scavenger pump and then the output hose proceeds to the transom (port-side) above-the-waterline thru-hull where it leaves the boat. In addition, the 1.125" bilge hose should also have an anti-siphon loop or check valve in it to prevent sea-water from backstreaming into the boat. Considering the possibility of accidental flooding, the bilge hose should also have an anti-siphon loop (its built into the 78 model as it is in the rat-hole where the hose passes thru (just 18" in front of the transom.) Any way haven't yet used the shower since it makes the interior teak very wet and will promote mildew. Try a shower bag in the sun & shower on the deck (after dark if you're timid). Unless you're in the Antarctic.

My shower drains into a sump that is drained via pump suction and discharged throught the same thru-hull fitting that supplies water to the head.

From: im McMordie jim_mcmordie@gilbarco.comHi Paul,
Our shower drain discharges into the bilge. We like this because we use the shower (often) and it gives the bilge (and our boat) that soapy fresh smell.

From: Bob McManis BMCMANIS@email.msn.comHi! I have an E-33 (84). My shower drain is piped through a bilge-type pump connected to a brass T-fitting on my flushing water intake thru-hull, so the flushing water intake acts as a discharge when the shower drain pump is activated.

From: Jay Call jaycall@mediaone.netHello, all. Our 1978 32 has what sounds like exactly the same system as described by John Chapman. When we acquired her, the shower sump pump didn't work, and it took a little trouble-shooting to discover that an in-line fuse to the scavenger pump (which is located just below the port-side battery bank) was blown. Took Jackie (who's much skinnier than me) a little wiggling to get both hands on the thing, but she managed, and the pump now works fine. I've also replaced the faucet and shower fixtures in the head. Since we live in SoCal, we've used the shower several times and it works great.
Also, when we got the boat, it didn't have any anti-siphon loops in it at all, anywhere. We've begun installing them, and everything will be protected by next summer. Till then, we'll just be careful--and watchful.

From: Joe Hrobuchak jh1251@yahoo.comAnyone know where the drain in the head floor drains? I have been unable to trace it out. My 1978 32 never had a shower-want to install one- any suggestions? Don't have a waterheater either just will use tank water...

From: Tom Gilbert TGil95746@aol.comThe head is supposed to drain via a hose into the bilge. The hose supplied was too small, the drain was too small, and the bilge was no place for soapy water. I opened up the shower drain, added a larger diameter hose, and installed a shower sump and pump and directed the waste water overboard at the sink throughhull. You'll notice a circuit breaker/switch for a D.C. power supply to a shower drain on your master D.C. panel. ( I hope) You can install a 6 gallon water heater on the starboard ledge of the engine compartment. It will use A.C. power only.
I also installed a hand held shower in the cockpit on the starboard side, way aft. It's great to use, and there's no real cleaning the area afterwards.

My drain is attached to a hose that snakes along under the floorboards and dumps into the bilge at the forward end of the engine. For hot water consider a Sun Shower, greatest thing since sliced bread for not many bucks.

The drain in our 77 32 Endeavour goes to the bilge. There should be a separate hose running under the floor from the head back to the bilge. The shower we have in the head is a combination spout for the sink as well as the shower head. It has a fexible hose connection that retracts under the sink when not being used as a shower. We also have the same faucet in the gallery sink that extends into the cockpit and can be used there to rinse off also.

From: Tom Berardinalli coolchange@mediaone.netThe drain in the head goes directly under the floor and dumps into the bilge and is pumped out with the bilge pump. That is how it is on my 1977 E-32.

From: Frank L. Willingham fwilling@mitre.orgIt drains into the aft bilge via a hose. Suggest you install a small shower pump and "Y" an extension piece of hose from that pump to the bilge pump outlet in the stern. Human body wash really stinks up the bilge!

From: Billy Vance & Julie Roberts Meadolninnn@aol.comThe shower drain is to a sump in a container in the bilge. the head is straight to a thru hull under the lavatory sink, we have replaced everything in our E-32. If you need help just yell, we have rebuilt ours from the keel to the masthead. Its an ' 81 E-32, and we have invested about $70,000.00 in the last 14 months to rebuild her (and yes we knew what we were getting into), we hired out a lot of the work, but we also did a lot ourselves. We now have a totally new E-32, and it is the utmost in sailing pleasure. Anything we can help with, it will be a pleasure to assist the group,

I have a '79 E32 and the drain in the sole of the head is just attached to a length of hose and gravity drains through the forward bilge compt. and then to the bilge and then pumped over by the bilge pump.As for a shower, my faucet set in the head has a port for a hand held shower head. Don't count on getting any hot water from a take-off of the engine because the monster runs too cool! That's confirmed by Mack Boring (Yanmar Specialists). If you're at a slip, by all means add a heater. Mine is mounted stbd., behind the cockpit cooler. Good Luck.
