Hi,
I would like to add a line and block boom vang to my E-32. The height from the mast step to the gooseneck for the boom is fairly shallow. Also, the aft deck hatch looks like it would become inoperable. Does anyone have experience with this, especially the geometry of the attachment points on the mast and boom?

David,
I own a 1982 E32 and looked into adding a rigid vang which makes the problem you're concerned about even worse. There are 2 issues:

1) the clearance of the hatch with the vang, and

2) getting the right angle on the vang so that you have some purchase.

I haven't added the vang but I spoke at length with Garhauer about the latter concern. They recommend that you try to get as close to a 45 degree angle as possible. If we do that with the existing clearance, the rigid vags that they offer don't fit. They recommend a minimum of 33" for the deck to boom clearance and if I remember correctly, the E32 has about 27"

The issue with the vang angle is that if you don't get the attachment out along the boom far enough, the vang can't apply purchase to it, if it's out too far, it will apply too much purchase and cause possible damage to the boom. I know there is a safe working range but I don't remember it off the top of my head.

My solution (or plan) was to raise the boom 6" not only to get the proper clearance and therefore the correct angle, but so that I could later add a dodger. I stand 6'0" and the boom when level will just kiss the old cranium. That doesn't leave any room for a dodger.

I was looking at the rigid vang so I could sail without a topping lift and add a little more roach to the main sail. The Garhauer runs about $230--not bad when you price out the soft vangs.

As for the hatch, you can flip it around so that it opens aft. With a soft vang it's probably less of an issue but you would probably need to keep the hatch closed when you're using it.

I'm considering replacing the non-adjustable topping lift with an adjustable topping lift, adjusted on the boom vs, rigid boom vang. Please let me know your thoughts, experiences. I have to somethinng soon. The existing topping lift doesn't look like it's long for this world.

Russ,
My personal feeling is that a rigid vang is the better solution and when I add a vang will go that route myself. Not only does it support the boom but offers better sail shaping ability. Also, in rolling conditions it keeps the boom from moving up OR down. However, when on your mooring you may want to retain the topping lift so that the vang isn't under constant tension. The boat I race on does it that way.

The only problem I've seen with a rigid vang on the E32 is getting the correct angle between the boom and the mast since there is little deck clearance. Also the hatch is very close to the mast and unless you flip it around to an aft opening one, it will interfere with the rigid vang. I had also considered raising my boom a couple of inches to help with the angle of the vang and to allow a dodger to be fit over the companion way. Several owners have done this.
