E40 Rudder Removal

From: Phillip JohnsonI did this job in 1996. First you need to block the boat high enough to remove the rudder, or be able to dig a 1'x3' by 1' deep pit to remove the rudder, or schedule a couple of extra lifts or block boat am extra foot higher.
Mark the steering cables for rudder amidships at the quadrant. Then detention the steering cables and remove them from the quadrant. Remove the quadrant, undo the hose clamps at the packing gland. Remove the retention preventer thru bolt and color above the upper bearing.
Out side Remove the stainless clam shells which hold rudder post to the skeg. With any luck a slight tap on the top of the rudder post will release the assembly and you will lower and cant it aft to remove.
