E37 Prop

Hello everyone
I would like to know if any E37 owners have changed their 2 blade propeller for a 3 blade and what was the result on the speed while motoring? what is it like when in reverse position - does it improve the performance at all? what is the effect under sail?Although it is still early in the season, I will be hauling out for winter in about 2 weeks and head back to Canada so I would like to know if any of you could share your experience in whether it is better to keep the fuel tank full when laying up for winter or is it better to empty it. Thank you

I changed to a three blade and there was certainly a major difference in power in all types of sea's. Great power in a head sea. Not much difference under sail with respect to speed. More control in reverse although still not great trying to go in a straight line. I always keep my tanks full to avoid moisture buildup during the winter.

From: A.C. Whitlow spiderjohn@alltel.netSpider John has had a three blade prop since we purchased the boat. With the Perkins running about 1800 rpm we cruise a little better than six knots at about .5 gph. That's with a full load of supplies. (10 cases of Guinness and a bag of chips) At 2100 rpm SJ creeps up past 7 knots but anything could happen at that speed so we usually hover around 1800. The boat stops well, but the prop walk can be challenging in reverse. I can back in a slip but it might take a second try. I don't know how the two blade props perform, but we have plenty of power to pull other boats off the mud / sand, etc. We might have powered off a couple sand bars as well, but who wants to talk about that? I suppose we lose some speed under sail, but Spider John isn't a speedster anyway.

From: Carl Hibbard Chgypsy@aol.comHello Jean-Louis,
Yes lots of people. the size for a fixed 3 blade appears to be a 17" diameter with a 16 pitch. Does it help forward ...yes, at the expense of some vibration which would be inherent with a 3 blade. In reverse there really isn't to much help, by personal experience you might try the bumping in and out of gear as you back up you can keep it straighter. It would appear that it does slow the boat under sail a trifle...thats a relative subject... Anyway, you can go to a folding one for that but they are expensive. Most of the reading and talking folks appear to stick with the adage that a full tank is better, less room for condensation. I did fill mine on a previous boat ---once---in the spring I had diesel running out of the vent pipe during an extremely hot (90deg) day. Now it seems that I run about 3/4 year after year when I pull out for the winter. I have not heard of anyone who wanted to empty their tank. However I do add a bio-cide.
BTW the diesel fuels that are available now have less lubricity agents in them and I add to the fuel for that purpose during the season, trying to alleviate tearing up the injector pump as long as possible.

Carl and Jean-Louis,
Most, if not all, the problems you're talking about can be alleviated with a feathering prop--especially with the reverse issue. Most people i know that have them will never go back to a fixed blade--they love them. About the cost of a new sail.

From: Fred A.Hewitt fredphonefree@cox.netHi, Fellow-Endeavour owers,
I have an E37 with terrible prop walk in reverse. My boat pulls to starboard so bad that I have great difficulty getting out of my slip. I am considering a Max-Prop, with Varible pitch. Is there anyone who has switched to a Max-Prop? I am very interested to know if performance in reverse is improved enough to justify the expense. Please respond if you have installed a Max-Prop. Thanks.

From: Allan Jones Ajonesanc@cs.comHi,
I have not talked to anyone with the Max Prop, but I have the same problem with my E-37. I removed the 3-bladed prop and had my spare 2-blade repitched to 17x14. This helped some and gave me 300 more rpm on the top end. I now cruise at near hull speed at 2000 rpm. Backing to port is still very difficult. Let me know if you have any luck.
