I would like to find a genset (used if possible) for an E 42.

Terry,
I am also in search of a Genset. My wife and I are planning our first extended cruise in about 11 years, and the ability to use our air conditioning away from the dock is appealing. Some how 11 years ago it did not seem as hot.

One thing that came up is to use an inverter have you ever thought of it. Currently Heart makes a 3KW unit with 60 Amp surge for around 1500 at discount. This appears to be more than enough power to cover the back air conditioner and the microwave.

Last year I retrofitted the Batteries with 6 Volt Golf Carts, and have 440AH in the house banks, I was looking at a Balmar unit with a 200 Amp alternator.

This package seems a lot cheaper, and maybe quieter than a 6.5KW Genset. I just got a quote from Northern Lights at $US8995 FOB Seattle, for a 5.5KW unit. I have the data sheet, and it will fit under the sink, forward of the engine. According to the Prints I have on the boat, this is were they would have installed it. I watched them lay up the hull on this one, and a sistership had a Genset, mine appears to have all the wiring conduits in place, a major time saver. My E42 Hull #155, has a tap in the fuel tank for the Generator, but I am not sure about the exhaust yet. Too cold to look at the moment.

Good luck in your search

I put a 5 KW SeaPower unit on my E-42. It runs off the main propulsion engine so installation does not involve another exhaust, another raw water intake and tapping into the fuel tank. It mounts on the side of the engine and is run by 2 belts on a double pulley on the front of the engine. It takes up MUCH less space, weighs MUCH less and costs MUCH less than a conventional diesel genset.. I can run both of my 12,000 BTU A/C's at once....I installed it myself...I've had it now for several years.

It's great! If you're interested, let me know and I can give you more details.

Hi all,
I am posting this as an update to my 9-Feb-2000 posting regarding Putting a Genset in my E42.

I finally decided, after a lot of research, and visiting a few factories, on a Phasor 6.5Kw Genset. I decided against the inverter, because it would require that I run the big Perkins to get enough power. The Phasor unit has a Kubota 3 cylinder diesel, and runs at 1800 RPM. I listened to it as a replacement for an old Onan before I purchased it, and it runs very quiet.

I ended up doing the install myself, and am having a lot of fun with it. I finished the mounting platform under the sink today, and the Genset arrives from Florida tomorrow.

I am putting together a materials list, and some labor comments that I will try to share as I get it finished.

One nice part about doing the work yourself, is that you can sail while the Resin sets up.

I had a Northern Lights 8 kw genset installed after Hurricane Hugo rebuild in 1990 and have had good sucess with it. I have used it numerous times while anchored out in the Charleston, SC area where it is very hot, no wind, and very buggy. I only have about 500 hrs. on it after about 10 years. I think Alaska Diesel is the US dist. for it.

I chose 8 kw because I have two daughters and a wife and when all are using the handheld hair dryers, it won't throw the breaker.
