Play in rudder and rudder post

As the result of a recent survey a small amount of play was discovered in the rudder post while moving the rudder (E40). The surveyor suggested that depending how the rudder was constructed that this could imply that the post was separating from the lateral straps. I would appreciate any feedback on either the design of the rudder or problems that anyone has had or heard of. Thank you,

Hi... I'm Ed. Proud owner of an E 40 also. It is not clear where you are talking about but let me say this; you rudder is very well made and is very unlikely that it is loose internally. Look closely at the skeg that holds the rudder lower bearing while you shake the rudder. There may be play there. Mine was loose after it got the hell beat out when it sunk. There were multiple fractures to the rudder and the key was shered but it was still strong as ever. That rudder must weigh over 100 LBS. To fix my problem I drilled a 3/4 in. hole straight up thru the skeg and installed a 3/4 stainless rod with a plate welded to the bottom and threaded on top ,some 5200,tighten her down ,and no wobble .... I hope this helps....
