E37 Cutter Conversion

From: Dale West Dale.West@MW.Boeing.comHas anyone ever cutter rigged a 37? Do you need additional backstay support? It looks like a baby stay could be run from the mast at the spreaders to just aft of the anchorline well. It also seems to me the foredeck would be extremely stiff just aft of that anchorline well, and strong enough to attach a padeye for the removable baby stay.

The E37 was available as a cutter in later years. Endeavour added a bowsprit to improve performance. In the earliest versions they left the forestay at the bow but eventually moved it out to the end of the bowsprit placing the tack of the inner just aft the bow. I have a copy of the sail plan of tall mast version (I=46') of this showing showing the tack of the inner for both versions.According to the drawing, when the headstay is attached to the end of the bowsprit, the tack of the inner forestay is located 4'3" aft the tack of the forestay.
When the headstay is located at the bow/stemhead, the tack of the inner forestay is located 6' aft the tack.

I had a cutter rigged E37 built in 1980 with the tall rig. The boat also had an add'l 2000 lbs. of lead ballast. The best reason for the cutter rig and tall mast was to offset the weather helm that set in about 15 or so knots. It did not need a baby stay because the mast section was oversize and did not deflect much. The staysail was on a traveler track which made the rig self tending during tacks.
The modifications made to the hull from the origional vessel it was built from took 6" off the keel and cut away the aft portion of the keel..This unbalanced the boat causomg early weather helm and made reefing at an early wind stage desirable. By the way, the E37 was built from the Creekmore 34 and the canoe body was blown out both fore and aft. Lee Creekmore was very unhappy that his design was used without his permission. If you notice, no designer was ever shown for the E37. Funny huh.
I lived on mine for four years and found her to be wonderful except for the problem noted above. Well built and able to take big seas.

Hello-
I have a 1985 Endeavour 33, new to me this year, which has been cutter rigged just as you describe. There is no additional backstay support. I only sailed the boat as a sloop this year while getting familiar. However, I intend to set up the cutter rig next year. Mine is set up with a furler also. I'm told by the original owner who installed it (not the person I purchased from ) that it works quite well. Good luck.
