1984 Endeavour 33

Name: Ed Dowd edowd@earthlink.com
Boat Name: Wind Walker
Year: 1984
Size: 33' sloop
Date Purchased:1998

Boat History:
Named 'Euphoria' from 87-98, the 2nd owners had moved the boat from Houston to Florida and used the boat for coastal cruising in the Tampa area. The systems had been kept in good to very good repair (with a few now discovered exceptions), and appearance in very good to excellent.

Experience:
Prior to moving to FL, experience had been on dive boats (as crew) and a few times sailing. This year have sailed as often as possible (3-4 times/wk), including preparing systems for and crewing on a Hunter 34 in the Havana Cup, a 9 day cruise from Tampa to Cuba and return.

Boat Review/Upgrades:
The E33 is a Bruce Kelly design, but I think also shows some standard Endeavour influences, such as fold down salon table, etc. (Am curious if & how the Kelly vs. Johnson design is truely different, ie my halyards appear to have never been wire.) Due to my newness at sailing, I chose this particular boat due to its fairly well maintained condition, as well as its reputation for being fairly stable while still performing moderately well. I am very pleased so far with the choice - she is stable, taking 8+'s in the gulf last week shortly after huricane Georges luckily missed us; and providing 4 to 6 kts fairly consistantly, with an occasional 7+. (Still at the stage of lots-to-learn and often laying with the trim.)

Rigging, etc: Headstay fitted North(Harken) roller furling with a 135 (also came with a light 150, which has not proved too well fitted for the boat), inboard genoa tracks, full batten main w/2 reef pts, vang, cabin top traveler, lazy jacks, 2 Lewmar #8's on mast, and 2 #43CST's for jib sheets. No lines are run back, so main halyard, reefing, outhaul, cunningham, etc. all require going up on deck. ( I actually have not found this inconvenient, but do wear a pfd harness and teather on when I am single handed.) Cockpit: 38 in. Edson w/ chain & cables to a radial quadrant (supported by an 'iron' sheave plate which was deteriorated and had to be replaced), full bimini w/back sun curtains and dodger.

Other: Batteries (modified) 4 ea Group 27 (3 house/1 start), Raritan 6 gal Water Heater, Holding tank & Y-valve, 2-burner
propane w/oven, Adler-Barbour Cold Machine, and Newmar charger. My one main concern is the iron support (I-beam shaped) under the mast step which is showing rust & scale. Also, the vertical iron I-beam under the cabin sole is showing some rust. If anyone else has encountered this, and/or solved it, please contact me.
