NEWS

We'll first of all, my apolgies to all Forum members. I've been extraordinarily busy this winter and it seems that the December issue of the EOF News never got done. Wish I could tell you that I was out sailing or working on my boat, but no, I've been strapped to my office chair. You also may have noticed that the postings have been taking a little longer to get up but none the less, they're all up now. Thank you to everyone who has been contributing to the Discussion Forum! We've really had some interesting discussions and they've been generating quite a lot of interest.

Last time I wrote, it was the end of the sailing season and mothballs were the standard issue for us northern latitude rag wavers. But spring is springing and if I'm like many of you, we've been to a boat show or two, crawled under those tarps to see what winter has wrought upon our boats, and begun working on those spring upgrades. Aboard "Friendly Confines" (1981 E32) is no exception. I've had many conversations with a number of you about mutual projects and interests. In particular I've been working on taking out the old alcohol stove and replacing it with a new propane. Barb keeps reminding me about how the salesman, some 10 years ago now, said that we'd never us it. Well, he was right but not because of lack of need. You see, Barb is somewhat of a cook and those darn alcohol stoves are a real pain in the keel to do anything on. Anyway, we just ordered all the 'pieces' so it should be arriving anyday soon.

The second project is to partially upgrade our electrical system. We have two deep cycle 85AH batteries and the original alternator (35amp) on the original Yanmar engine. Fine for day sailing but not much more. We've been looking at putting in two 6v batteries to give us either 220 or 350 AH. That means a bigger alternator and smart charging. At this pace we may never get in the water, but my hopes for next year are to strip and repaint the mast and boom, add a rigid vang, move the traveler to the coach roof (?), and replace our main. Whew!

By the end of last summer, Barb, Eric, Kyle, Ryan and I had been out sailing quite a lot, almost every weekend. This summer our plans are for a 3- to 4-week trip to the north half of Lake Michigan. We hope to spend some time checking out the Door Peninsula, Beaver Island, and Traverse Bay with stops on the way home at Harbor Springs, Charlevoix, and Pentwater. The new stove should come in handy and the crew is getting to the point that they are really helpful.

MEMBERSHIP STATISTICS

Over the winter our membership increased by almost a third again! I'm not sure why but the Forum saw an increas of 45 new registered members bringing the total up from 142 to 185. About half of the new members have been finding us right on the net (search engines and other web site links), while the other half have come from member referals. Thanks to all of you who have passed on info to friends and people you've met. During this period we say a large jump in new members of E32s and E37s

 SIZE  NUMBER  YEARS REPRESENTED
 32  43  1975-1981
 33  13  1984
 35  8  1983-1986
 37  33  1977-1981
 38 15  1985
 40  24  1981-1984
 42  35  1984-1991
 43 14  1979-1984

As a result of the increased membership, you will find that the owner reviews of Endeavours has greatly increased. As you may expect most owners are really pleased with their boat, and many have either completed, are in the middle of, or begining refits. This is a great opportunity to really use the Discussion Forum to contribute and share your experiences with everyone.

WELCOME NEW MEMBERS!

On that note, all I can say is WOW! We're really growing fast. I'd like everyone to welcome all of the new members who have joined the Forum since our last newsletter:

MEMBER NEWS

In our last issue, the feature article VIA THE CANAL by Don and Ellen Freeman aboard their 1980-E43 "Sirius Endeavour" took us on a trip through Costa Rica, the Panama Canal, and Honduras. Back in November I received an update from them which is as follows:

We are given to reflection during this holiday season and in particular about our voyage from Mexico down the Pacific coats of Central America, through the Panama Canal, into the Caribbean, north to Roatan and up the Rio Dulce river into Guatamala where we had left "Sirius Endeavour" for the just ended hurricane season. We have so much to rejoice over, our cruise has been wonderful, and our memories glorious, though we feel sorrow for those whose lives have been tainted by "Mitch's" destructive path.
In Guatemala, where we left "Sirius Endeavour," 60 inches of rain fell and the river rose, drowning the marina and restaurants; in Morales, 25 miles to the south, the floods stripped the town bare, leaving mostly the highway; at Puerto Barrios 24 miles from "Sirius Endeavour," the winds reached 80mph and 12 miles away at Lake Izabel, 60mph was recorded. From the air, it was reported the area appeared as an inland sea. The road from Guatemala City where we fly into, has been repaired and we will make it back to the Rio Dulce; and we rejoice, fro we are told "Sirius Endeavour" yet floats, tugging at her mooring and probably undamaged. For us, our voyage will continue, our story yet to be written; fresh adventures awaiting. We are the lucky ones! We feel compelled to make something of our good fortune--and we will. When we return, we'll explore the Mayan ruins at Tikal, Quirigua, Copan, the mountain highlands ofAntigua and Lake Atilan, the reefs of Belize and the Yucatan before heading across the Gulf of Mexico to Key West and the East Coast. We wish you a joutous new year.

Todd Evans (CT) wrote to tell us that he recently realized his dream of owning an Endeavour when last August he purchsed "Evening Star", a 1985 E33. He also tells us that in the Mystic area there are few Endeavours and feels lucky to be the owner of a boat that not everyone has in the area.

Steve Glick (RI) aboard "Moby", his 1984 E33, wrote to tell us that his winter projects will be relaively minor this year. He just repalced the galley sink and faucet, will be re-rigging the mainsheet, and running the main halyard, vang, and reefing lines aft.

Barbara & Bill Lowenberg (TX), write to all fellow 'Endeavourites' that they are currently on a 5-year cruising plan cruising on their E42 "Last Dance". Hope all is well since last hearing from them last October. Noting that they are digital neanderthals, we'll make sure we 'snail mail' the newsletter to them at their last known address. If someone runs into the, please say hello.

James F VerPlanck (Puerto Rico) writes to say that he was virtually untouched by this seasons past "storm". However the homes nearby on shore didn't fair to well.

Capt. Carrier (FL) writes: Greetings Fellow Endeavour Owners, Had a great time on the water during the New Year Holidays. We were out for six days, sailed down to Ft. Myers. Had plans for going to Captivia, but there was the Red Tide. Our next major outing is to Cuba this Memorial Day weekend. We will be leaving St. Petersburg on or around the 27th of May. And plan on returning to St. Petersburg on the 6th of June. Are there any other Endeavour owners going this year. I have seen in past letters where some of you have crewed for others. This will be our first time in Cuba and are looking forward to it. As for projects, they are on going and many. The most recent, leaky water tank removal. Well, I am not going to bore you with all of the details, so hope to see you on the high seas.

Arthur Weekley is making custom half hull models. If your interested drop him a line. All you need are the plan and profile views. You can reach him at: artweek@ids.net

Jack Blake of "Cure the Blues", a 1978 E32 is also replkacing his alcohol stove with a propane unit this spring. The old 'Galley Maid' is free for the taking. Look under the For Sale listings or e-mail him at: B82094@aol.com

If your looking for Perkins Engine parts, Craig at Gerogian Equipment in Ont. Canada writes: We have had the Perkins engine line for 11 years. We are able to offer parts by part number or SN# ,new, used & after market parts for items that may have poor availibility. You can reach me at: PH: 705-325-3431 FX: 705-326-8425 or E-mail scout@bconnex.net There are also other sources listed in the Discussion Forum

Chris and Jennifer Land (SC) of "Moon-Struck", a 1982 E37 write to tell us that: " . . . they along with their daughter Jessica, 6, and son Weston, 2-1/2 are preparing their boat but will probably not be ready to head south until late summer or early fall (hurricane season!!). Their goal is to be in the Virgins by New Years Eve 1999! I love what I have seen. Keep up the good work with the forum!"

Daryl DiDio (NY) writes to let us know that "Nikki D" his 1986 E42 is up for sale. He says that "he would like to find her a new home among people who appreciate this type of vessel. You can find his listing under the For Sale listings. Sorry to see you go Daryl!

Wayne & Jan Turk aboard "Sea Ya", their 1983 E40 write: "We are about to depart on a trip to the Bahamas & return to Panama City around the first of May. We have an Endeavor 40 (Sea Ya) & plan to make the trip with another boat (Morgan 41-Extasea). We have just installed a marine sideband radio & plan on checking in regularly on the available nets, so if any other members out there hear us, give us a shout. We also will be using e-mail often. We plan to leave Panama City around the 26th of Jan & make a short hop to Appalachicola-then cross to Clearwater. From there daysail down the West coast of Florida to the Marco Island area then across to either Marathon or Key west depending on our schedule, weather, etc. From the Keys we will leave from the Key Largo area & go over to South Riding Rock or Gun Cay. From there to Chubb Cay to check in. Then to Porgee Rocks which is just past Nassau. Then across the yellow bank to probably Normans Cay & start working our way down to Georgetown. We're excited.

Laura & David Deere, new members from San Antonio, Texas write to tell us that they took 2nd place in the Frostbite Regatta this last January on Canyon Lake, Texas. "Genevieve" is a 1981 E32 and easily handeled the blustery conditions, racing against an Irwin 28, Tayana 36, Valient 30 and a number of other smaller boats. You can see her on the Endeavour Photos page. Way to go guys!

David Shelton just recently redid all his cushions inside and out. He contacted JSI in Florida - 1-800-234-3220 and dealt with Steve Meadows. "He is very helpful and has most if not all patterns for the Endeavours. They made the original cushion sets for Endeavour."

ISLAND TIME
by Bud Berry and Diana Boulden
"Island Time" 1987-E42

Saturday, 1/30/99
We finally did it today when we started on the first leg of our Island Time Cruise . . . the adventure began Sat at 7:30 in Whittaker Creek Yacht Harbor when all our hard core sailor friends got up to have coffee with us and wish us bon voyage...
We made it to our first stop in Swansboro Saturday about 2:20 and had a cool but wonderful day. We anchored near the center of town and dinghy'd into the town dock and took a wonderful walk thru this neat little town. For pictures of our trip and notes from our weekly log go to the web page: http://members.aol.com/islandtm/travel/index.htm

Day 2, 1/31/99
Left Swansboro anchorage at 7:30. The anchorage held in swift currents. We arrived at Wrightsville Beach at 3:30 . . . cloudy, windy & cold. We saw our first pod of dolphin today!! Also we bumped bottom today near a dredging operation for a little added excitement. We went thru four bridges today and found that bridge tenders are...hmmmm.... a really fun breed of people to deal with. After we tied up at sea path marina in Wrightsville we found out we could hook up cable for the tv so we can watch the super bowl game!!! All in all a wonderful day 2 in the adventures of island time.

Day 3 2/1/99
We woke up to a cool and cloudy morning and decided to make a run for it casting off at 8:30am. The morning was really warmer than yesterday and we tied a canvas lee cloth on the windward side and stayed dry and out of the wind all day!! We saw a huge dolphin today swimming right alongside "Island Time" before we entered the CAPE FEAR RIVER!!! Ever wonder why they call it that . . . as soon as we got into the ocean channel, we immediately saw a huge ocean freighter closing fast behind us. Also as we left the Cape Fear River we ran into a mad whirlpool of water and it jerked the boat around for a little added excitement!!! We crossed into South Carolina and ended the day at Cricket Cove Marina. A wonderful dinner at the restaurant here ended Day 3!

See ya on the water!

Much Love,
Bud and Diana

NEED INFO

In our last issue we asked all of you to help with supplying us with information on all the Endeavour's so that we can expand the site with areas for each individual size boat. Thank you's go to the following owners who sent us information about their boats: Joal Fryer, Les Baston, D. C. Denise, Steve Glick, and Ed Yusis. Tom Powers we now have a color copy of the E40 brochure which we'll use to build the E40 section of the Endeavour Forum. If anyone is willing to help out, we still need the following:
Copies of the Owner's Manuals for the Endeavour 34, 35, 38, 40, 42, 43, 48 and 51.
Copies of the brochures and profile/sailplan for the following: Endeavour 33, 34, 35, 43, 48 and 51.
We need this information to develop areas in the Forum, specific to each boat. In addition, the owner's manuals will be available on-line for download, for those who need them. If you can help us by sending us a copiy of yours, we would be very appreciative.

If you have a story, would like to share an experience, or have a bit of humor or sailing knowledge you would like to share, please send it to THE ENDEAVOUR OWNERS GROUP. And by the way, I don't make any overtures about the accuracy of the information in the newsletter.
