E37 Ketch Maststep

I am making an offer on a 77 37' Ketch Project boat. My question is: Does the fiber glassed in beam aft of the mast step support the step in any way? The boat has extensive rot in that beam due the owner never have the mast boot properly installed for 12 years. How is the mast supported? Is that big block iron? Would I need to replace that beam before sailing her home (about 100 miles)?Any answers and support information would be greatly appreciated.

I have never seen an Endeavour 37 Ketch... however the Irwin aft cockpit ketch is very very similar..and I have seen that..
The cross beam under the cockpit floor should be a block of epoxy impregnated 2x4. It actually is mounted to the rear of the mizzen mast which adds the torsional strength to the cockpit floor with the boat under sail. Picture it under the front lip of the steering pedistal glassed in from side to side. The cockpit floor was built up heavier on all of the hulls where the mizzen mast step would be mounted (even on a non ketch). It has an aluminum step which is literally identical to the mainmast step.

Don't know why you'd have to.
FWIW: My friend with the Irwin hates that mizzen mast as your helm position is right under its boom, and its a pain to work around the rigging as you move back and forth in the cockpit...picture docking. Just the aft rigging for the sheets are a pain. For this reason he does not use the mizzen most of the time. :>) Hope this helps.

Thanks but this refers to the mizzen mast. The beam behind the mainmast in the cabin is rotted. Directly in front of that beam is the mainmast step. I need to know if the beam is attached to the step to reduce side to side torsion. Thanks for the helpPs: The ketch sheet is out on the stern and out of the way. I prefer the sail configuration options a ketch offers.

The support as now defined is definately critical. I am now assuming that this is a "B" model ketch. Does it have a seperate ss rod from the mast step to the mast collar at the cabin top, this stops the cabin top from lifting, while a cross support is as this person has surmized the lateral support. But this boat has worse problems than that. If the actual support beam is rotten so would the deck be around the mast partner area in all probability, in order for the water to work back to that beam.

From: Rex Crawford Sockhat1@aol.comWe have an 1984 E-33. Our mast is stepped on what appears to be a carbon steel fixture. Carbon steel and water!!!!! is rust city. We used a cheap mast boot and some 5200 to stop our mast irrigation system. The last leak was from around the bolt or rod that pushes thru the mast to hold it in position. Again a dab of 5200 does the trick every time.

Mast is partially open on top and allows water in. "Boot" does not seal mast where it inters hull. I hear there is a great "boot" that seals very well, don't recall type. Sorry not more helpful.
